Dr. Thomas Burroughs is the Executive Director of the Saint Louis University Center for Outcomes Research (SLUCOR) and a Professor of Internal Medicine and Health Management and Policy. Dr. Burroughs obtained his undergraduate degrees in mathematics and psychology, master’s degrees in psychology and mathematical statistics and a PhD in psychology from Washington University in 1996. Following graduation, Dr. Burroughs joined the BJC Center for Healthcare Quality and Effectiveness and became a faculty member in the Department of Medicine at Washington University. He was the principal architect behind the customer satisfaction measurement system for BJC Health System that assesses patient, employee and physician satisfaction across 13 hospitals, 5 nursing homes, and more than 100 ambulatory care sites. In addition, he directed the development of an online reporting system that provides real-time data to more than 2000 managers on a daily basis. This reporting system, BJCScores, was the winner of the 1999 HIMSS National Quality Management Award. In 2003, Dr. Burroughs was recruited to SLU School of Medicine to build the Center for Outcomes Research. Across the past three years, he has recruited a team of 7 full time faculty as well as a staff of biostatisticians, programmers, and program administrators. Funded by the NIH, VA, private foundations and industry, SLUCOR faculty lead research to evaluate clinical interventions in transplantation, diabetes, cardiology, renal and geriatrics. Dr. Burroughs has led numerous research studies in the measurement/analysis of customer satisfaction data, the determinants of patient health-care behaviors, and the evaluation of clinical interventions in transplantation and diabetes. He has published and lectured widely in these areas. Two years ago in conjunction with the School of Public Health, SLUCOR launched a PhD program in Outcomes Research, which just accepted its second cohort of PhD students. This program provides advanced graduate students with rigorous training in clinical medicine, outcomes measurement, economics and statistical analysis. Dr. Burroughs lives in Edwardsville with his wife, Jill, and their three boys (9-year olds twins and a 6 year old).
