Liver damage associated with the failure to excrete abnormal a1-Antitrypsin. Common in Europeans and Scandinavians

In the United States
1 in 2,000 are homozygous, 1 in 30 are heterozygous
Autosomal recessive trait
Symptoms Diagnosis Treatment/Prevention
In adolescents – chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis

In adults – Cirrhosis with portal hypertension

May cause emphyseama
Medical history

Physical exam

Blood tests

Liver biopsy
Liver transplantation
